BASIC DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENT TRAINING COURSE (BDAT)

The Basic Developmental Assessment Training Course is developed to equip doctors and paediatricians with the basic practical skills in performing developmental assessment in children.

Parental concerns about children’s development, is one of the most common reasons for a visit to the Paediatricians. Developmental disabilities and behavioural disorders are among the most common health conditions in children with a prevalence of 13%. It is therefore important for paediatricians to be able to assess development of children.

Unfortunately many paediatricians and paediatric trainees in Nigeria and Africa are not very confident in assessing children’s development due to lack of training in developmental paediatrics. This course was designed to breech the gap.

Dr Gbemisola Boyede, a trained neurodevelopmental paediatrician developed this course in 2015 to breech this gap. Several paediatric trainees and paediatricians in many cities of Nigeria and Ethiopia have taken the Basic Developmental Assessment Training Course which they have found very informative and useful in their daily clinical practice. This training is now available as this online course.

While you will not automatically become Developmental Paediatricians by attending this training course; you will acquire sufficient knowledge and skills at the end of the training to be able to confidently perform developmental assessments in children including those with developmental disabilities.

Dr Gbemisola Boyede is a Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician and the Founder/CEO of Ask The Paediatricians Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/groups/askthepaed). She started Ask The Paediatricians Foundation, a registered non-governmental organisation in Nigeria first as a Facebook Group in July 2015 out of her passion as a Paediatrician to reduce unnecessary and preventable deaths of children which are often due to ignorance in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Gbemisola Boyede is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians, Faculty of Paediatrics (FWACP (Paed)). She also has the Sub-specialty Fellowship in Developmental Paediatrics of the College of Paediatricians of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, FSDP (SA) and a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Developmental Paediatrics (with distinction in thesis) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Dr Boyede is actively involved in academic and clinical research and has published papers in local and international journals. She is a recipient of two international research grants. She has presented papers at local and regional scientific conferences.

Her research interests include cognitive functioning in chronic paediatric diseases, developmental assessments in resource-poor setting, autism spectrum disorders, neurodevelopment of HIV-infected children and cerebral palsy. She developed the BDAT course and regularly trains paediatricians, resident doctors and general practitioners in Basic Developmental Assessment

Dr Boyede also writes and speaks regularly on health care issues of children on National dailies, Radio and TV programmes. Dr Gbemisola and her work on the Ask The Paediatricians Foundation have been recognized by international corporate organization such as Facebook and featured in many local and international media like the BBC.

Dr Gbemisola Boyede is a recipient of many local and international awards and fellowships.
